shamatha

Stop

Samatha is exemplified by three practices, it can be done with or without meditative support objects

  • mindfulness of breathing
  • taking the impure mind as the path
  • awareness of awareness

breathing meditative supports

  • wherever the sensation is strongest
  • entire body, the nostrils, the abdomen rising and falling
  • pace, pressure, temperature

the progression is analogous to purification of body, speech and mind letting go of identifications and clinging to those 3 and the five aggregates

compares to vajrayana isolation of body, speech, mind and dzogchen clear light

the first step of shamatha is stopping or non doing then gaining the ability a requirement skill to focus on various meditations and is used simultaneously with vipassana
