Stop
Samatha is exemplified by three practices, it can be done with or without meditative support objects
- mindfulness of breathing
- taking the impure mind as the path
- awareness of awareness
breathing meditative supports
- wherever the sensation is strongest
- entire body, the nostrils, the abdomen rising and falling
- pace, pressure, temperature
the progression is analogous to purification of body, speech and mind letting go of identifications and clinging to those 3 and the five aggregates
compares to vajrayana isolation of body, speech, mind and dzogchen clear light
the first step of shamatha is stopping or non doing then gaining the ability a requirement skill to focus on various meditations and is used simultaneously with vipassana
